Custom software development cost ranges from $25,000 to over $1 million. Here is what drives the price and what to budget for.

Custom software development costs range from about $25,000 for a small tool to more than $1 million for an enterprise platform. The price depends mostly on the scope of the project, the number of integrations, and the location of the team building it.

Clutch’s project data puts the average custom software project at about $132,000, with a delivery time of about 13 months. Many buyers expect a project to take three or four months. The figures in this blog come from published 2026 pricing data. Actual quotes vary by vendor and by project.

Custom Software Development Cost by Project Size

Most pricing guides split custom software into three sizes. One 2026 guide for the US market gives these ranges. A small internal tool or MVP costs $25,000 to $80,000, takes two to four months, and needs a team of two or three people. A mid-complexity product costs $80,000 to $300,000, takes four to ten months, and needs four to seven people. An enterprise platform starts around $300,000 and can pass $1 million, according to gotechsolutions.

A small build usually means a single workflow, such as an internal dashboard or a simple booking app. A mid-size build covers things like a CRM, an inventory system, or a customer portal with payments. Enterprise projects tend to involve multi-tenant SaaS products or ERP systems with many integrations, and they often run 6 to 18 months.

Other sources give different numbers. Some price small tools as low as $5,000 to $25,000, and others put a mid-size application at $150,000 to $400,000. The differences come from team location, how much is included in the scope, and how each firm defines small, mid-size, and large. Most of these guides are written by development companies, so the ranges work best as a starting point for budgeting and should be checked against real quotes.

Products built around AI cost more than the same product without it. One 2026 breakdown puts AI-native products at $1 million to $2 million or more because of custom model work and data pipelines on top of the regular build.

What Drives the Price

The biggest factor is where the team is based. Developers in lower-cost regions charge about $20 to $80 an hour, while US rates run from $50 to over $250. Take a mid-size application of 1,500 hours. At $150 an hour, that comes to around $225,000, and at $40 an hour, it comes to around $60,000, according to Timeline Digi. Most buyers start comparing regions because of that gap, but the hourly rate only tells part of the story. A team spread across several time zones, or one that needs more guidance, can take longer and use up some of the savings.

Scope has the next biggest effect. A single workflow with one or two integrations is a modest project. Once you add several user roles, reporting, and a dozen connections to outside systems like payment providers or accounting software, the work multiplies, since every integration has to be built and tested on its own.

Experience matters as well. Senior developers cost more per hour, but they tend to finish faster and leave less to fix later, so a cheaper team can end up costing about the same by the end. Projects that handle payments, health records, or personal data also need extra security work and documentation, which adds to the bill.

As for where the money goes during the build, one 2026 breakdown puts backend development at 25 to 35% of the budget, frontend at 20 to 30%, and project management at 10 to 15%. Discovery, design, testing, and deployment take the rest.

What It Costs After Launch

The build is the biggest payment, but it is followed by a smaller one every year. Most guides suggest setting aside 15 to 25% of the build cost annually for maintenance, security patches, and small improvements, with hosting and licenses on top. On a $150,000 project, that comes to roughly $22,500 to $37,500 a year. Another guide puts maintenance, hosting, and compliance together at 20 to 40% of the build price, which lands in about the same place.

Hosting is worth planning for early. If the team does not think about infrastructure from the first sprint, the company ends up inheriting an expensive design that costs more every month.

It is also worth checking whether you need custom software at all. One three-year comparison came to about $195,000 for a custom build, including $150,000 for development, against $120,000 for prebuilt software. Custom starts to make sense when existing products cannot handle how your business works. In one example, a company’s pricing logic could not run on Shopify, and a custom platform with those capabilities cost $100,000 to $150,000.

How to Plan a Budget

Start with a discovery phase. Most agencies will not give you a firm number until they have sat down with you and mapped out what the software needs to do. It usually costs a few thousand dollars, and a $3,000 to $5,000 discovery sprint is a small price next to finding out in month six that the scope was wrong.

If you can, build a smaller first version. Pick the one workflow the business depends on most and build only that. Your first users will tell you which of the other features they want, and a few of the ones you planned will probably turn out to be unnecessary.

When the quotes come in, line them up side by side. Two vendors can quote $60,000 and $140,000 for what sounds like the same project, and the difference is usually in what one of them left out, such as testing, project management, or support after launch. Ask each for a breakdown by phase, and ask for a timeline too. The average project takes about 13 months, so a vendor promising four should be able to explain why yours will go faster.

Put maintenance in the budget from the start. On a $150,000 build, that means another $22,500 to $37,500 a year. A company that budgets only for the build can end up unable to pay for updates a year later.

Custom software development cost depends mostly on scope, so write down what the software has to do on day one before you talk to anyone. Then get at least two quotes and compare them line by line.
